Electrical Service & Panel Upgrades

A service upgrade may not be the most exciting home project, but it delivers real, lasting results that homeowners notice every day. At MNE Electric, we handle complete electrical service upgrades and panel upgrades from the meter to the main panel—including coordination with local utilities and permitting—for homes and properties in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and nearby areas of Baldwin County.

Modern Gulf Coast homes demand more power than older systems were designed to deliver. High-efficiency HVAC, tankless water heaters, induction ranges, EV chargers, whole-home generators, hot tubs, and home offices can quickly push a 100-amp (or smaller) service past its limits. The result is frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, limited expansion options, and increased safety risk.

Service Upgrade vs. Panel Upgrade

  • Panel upgrade — Replaces the main breaker panel (load center) itself. This is often done when the existing panel is outdated, full, damaged, or uses obsolete/recalled equipment, while the incoming service capacity remains adequate.
  • Service upgrade — Increases the total electrical capacity delivered to the property (commonly 100A → 200A, or higher to 320/400A when needed). This typically includes the meter base/socket, service entrance conductors, main disconnect, grounding/bonding system, and a new panel sized for the higher amperage. Utility coordination is required.

Many projects combine both. We evaluate your existing equipment, perform proper load calculations, and recommend the right scope so you get the capacity and safety you need without unnecessary work.

Common Reasons Homeowners Upgrade

  • Frequent breaker trips or overloaded circuits
  • Flickering or dimming lights when large appliances start
  • Planning an EV charger, heat pump, induction range, generator, or major remodel
  • Older 60A or 100A service that no longer meets modern needs
  • Insurance or home-inspection flags on outdated panels
  • Desire to add circuits or future-proof the home for resale or long-term ownership
  • Bringing the installation into compliance with current code requirements (including outdoor emergency disconnect provisions where applicable under the NEC adopted in Baldwin County)

What We Handle

We manage the full process:

  • Site evaluation and load calculation
  • Permit application with the appropriate authority (City of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Baldwin County, etc.)
  • Coordination with the utility (Baldwin EMC, Riviera Utilities, or others serving your location) for disconnect/reconnect
  • Replacement or upgrade of meter base, service entrance conductors, weatherhead/mast or underground riser as needed
  • New main panel (or meter-main combination) sized for the required amperage
  • Proper grounding and bonding upgrades
  • Circuit reconnection, labeling, and testing
  • Required inspections and final utility reconnection
  • Whole-home surge protection and preparation for EV charging or generator interlock/transfer switch

All work is performed to applicable National Electrical Code requirements and local amendments. Alabama Electrical License #03403.

Benefits of a Proper Upgrade

  • Reliable power without constant nuisance trips
  • Capacity for today’s high-demand equipment and future additions
