Can I use a higher amperage breaker on a circuit?

In most cases you cannot upsize the circuit breaker. The breaker must be sized to protect the conductor of the circuit (wire size). 14 AWG wire max amperage is 15 amps. 12 AWG wire max amperage is 20 amps so if your tripping circuit is size 14 AWG, you cannot use a 20 amp breaker.
